Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron Panini Press and Skillet Grill Sets Review

Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron Panini Press and Skillet Grill Sets
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I originally wrote this review for the press alone. At the time I bought the press, Amazon wasn't offering the press/pan as a set. Now it does and since anyone interested in this product is probably going to be looking at reviews of the set rather than the individual components, I'll repeat my review, with enhancements:
While shopping a retail cooking store, I fell in love with the Krups FDE312 panini press. A bit of Amazon research, however, turned up a disturbing pattern of sudden failures in this product. Research into other presses from Cuisinart, DeLonghi, Breville, Villaware, and others failed to produce a clear front runner. It seemed that each product had one or more issues - non-removable grill plates, difficult cleaning, lack of grill ribs, flimsy handles, tendency to dry food, non-adjustable temperature, etc. Enter the Le Creuset 10 ¼" grill pan and panini press. You can submerge them to clean. They're coated with enamel, not Teflon, which means with proper care they should last two lifetimes (although they're only guaranteed for the lifetime of the original owner)(and note, this is a satin enamel coating, not the Le Creuset smooth coating, the longevity of which I can confirm from personal experience). There's no electrical element to burn out, no cord to store, no moving parts to break. Use is simple. Heat the grill on one burner (we have gas, but they're supposed to work with other technologies) and the press on the other. Wait until a spatter of water vaporizes almost instantly. Brush grill pan with some oil. Place sandwiches on grill pan. Pick up the press, brush on some oil, place on sandwiches and press for a few moments. Sizzle, sizzle. Wait until the cheese melts. Serve. The panini were just like what I'd eaten in Italy. I haven't owned an electric press, but I can't imagine they'd be better. Cleanup of the enamel surface requires a bit of care but, unlike every Teflon-coated product I've ever owned, that surface will probably still be there 20 years from now. And since the grill pan actually has sides (unlike every electric panini press I looked at), there was no side-spattering and thus no cleanup to do around the cooking area. The only disadvantages - the grill/press combination costs $140, almost twice the cost of the average electric panini grill. But since many of the grill reviews I read spoke of this being their second (or third) electric grill, I suspect you'd make the money back over the next 20 years. Also, running multiple batches is a bit more of a problem than with a self-heating grill, since you need to place the now oily press back on the flame to reheat it, which can potentially lead to flaring of the residual oil, and will also get the burner oily. I intend to see, however, if you can reheat the press in the pan rather than putting it directly on a burner.

For the cook who likes to grill and create special appetizers like Italian panini, bruschetta and crostini, the Le Creuset panini press and skillet grill set works much like an outdoor grill (only faster), searing your foods on both sides at once, leaving them with rippled, blackened grill marks. With both of these pieces, you can grill quickly - prepare chicken breasts, burgers, swordfish or the classic panini. When cooking a panini, the bread becomes crisp and crunchy while the insides remain soft and succulent. The Square Grill Pan With Panini Press Includes: A 10.25-in. square grill pan, complete with long handle, a helper handle and spouts for pouring off excess oils9-in. panini press with a round knob on top for holding. Heat the press separately then place on top of your food and both sides will cook at once. Both have ribbed surfaces and are made of enameled cast iron, a material that retains heat longer and spreads it evenly for superior cooking performance.

31508 Toaster Oven Review

31508 Toaster Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Two months ago I bought the Hamilton Beach 31507 which I am told by HB is the same as this one, only without the stainless steel front. If you are looking for a toaster oven that does not take up much space yet holds a 9" cake pan, this is the one for you. It bakes, it broils, and voila it toasts evenly. You just have to experiment a little bit as to whether to choose the light toast icon or the dark icon. Just remember to turn the timer dial past 10 and then back to your toast setting. We have baked and broiled chicken breasts and fish, have heated up vegetable filled croissants. Made open faced sandwiches. Everything came out perfectly. There are two slot heights for the rack, and the rack itself is configured to be used high or low. The slide out crumb pan is very convenient. The only negative is that the bake pan while sturdy seems to have a thin coating which I think will break down over time. If that happens I will just get another bake pan. One thing to look out for when searching for a toaster oven is how hot the outside gets. They all get hot, especially on top and the glass door, but some OTHER BRANDS we tried got to the point of SIZZLING. The 31507 one does not get to that point, but I wonder if having a stainless steel front and top or not makes the difference.

Wolfgang Puck WPDCORP20 Bistro Digital Convection Oven with Rotisserie and Pizza Drawer Review

Wolfgang Puck WPDCORP20 Bistro Digital Convection Oven with Rotisserie and Pizza Drawer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The pizza oven works fine but it only heats at 350 degrees so you can't REALLY cook a pizza properly at that temperature. The rotisserrie works OK but the claim that you can put a large bird on there are false. The oven is tiny and the 3# bird has to be tied up tighter than a football to keep from touching the bottom of the oven (it cooks okay though). The standard bake oven is absolutely terrible - it cooks so uneven it's not even funny (I have a pumpkin pie cooking at this moment that has burned streaks on one edges and the middle is still liquid, and yes, I have foil over it) - cookies bake crispy on one end and chewy on the other. The convection is finicky - it will cook things very quickly but it's not easy to get it right since there is no magic time as to exactly when it will be finished.....I baked a fruit pie that was gorgeous on the outside and totally raw on the inside. I ended up cooking it again in the standard oven - I had to keep turning and turning to keep it from browning unevenly. So....all of that to say it's ok. It was convenient to have this holiday to keep a couple dishes warm. The pizza oven is convenient, but not as convenient as a space saving toaster oven which is basically what it is. Except a toaster oven is better made for the most part...the crummy plastic buttons on this thing feel like they will pop out everytime they are touched. Oh, it takes ages to heat up and it's frustrating if you don't hear the faint beep the oven just shuts off...grrrr.

A useful addition to any kitchen, this versatile countertop oven helps make mealtime a snap, whether cooking for a crowd during the holidays when extra cooking space comes in handy or simply keeping up with the everyday demands of a busy family. The three-in-one appliance offers a spacious 4/5-cubic-foot capacity and functions as a convection oven, a rotisserie, and a pizza baker. The pizza drawer accommodates pizzas up to 12 inches in diameter, and its swing-out ergonomic stay-cool handle makes it easy to slide pizzas in and out of the oven (handle folds out of the way when not in use). Even more, the oven's user-friendly push-button controls and digital blue LCD read-out makes it easy to program. Simply adjust the temperature up to 450 degrees F, set the electronic timer (lower oven up to 30 minutes; upper oven up to three hours), and choose from nine settings: defrost, keep warm, standard bake, convection bake, slow cook, roast, broil, rotisserie, and lower oven (for baking pizzas). The unit's convection cooking promotes fast, even heating at lower temperatures and without hot spots, and its rotisserie cooking option works great for whole chickens, roasts, and more. Other thoughtful design details include an "on" indicator light, an easy-to-clean nonstick interior with stainless-steel side rails, and a child lock to prevent changes to oven settings during the cooking cycle. Accessories include two baking racks, a rotisserie spit and fork, a rotisserie removal tool, a drip/baking pan with a broil-pan insert, two removable crumb trays (one for the pizza drawer), and a user manual with recipes. Attractively housed in durable stainless steel, the ETL-listed 1500-watt convection oven measures approximately 19 by 15-1/2 by 14 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

I have a built in outside grill called fire magic that resently cost me close to 500.00 to fix and bring back up to new condition. The problem is that the juices from the meats go past the flavor gates down to the burnners that can cause a plug up. I purchased the Charbroil Heatwave because it caputures the jucies in the bowls that are underneath the porclein cooking crates so no jucies will hit the burner. Great product, and as a bounus the foods cooked on this grill tastes better that the $ 2200.00 fire magic grill. It's a no brainer purchase.Buy it!!!

Toasts and bakes well. I just toasted an english muffin and it came out fine. (didn't understand review about not toasting). Makes nice, crispy (not burnt) waffles. Oven gets hot fast (less pre-heat time). Compact size (I live in an apartment so that's important). I gave it only 4 stars because it's not too attractive. But, it works well!

This is a very well built grill that stands up to the harshest environments while in storage and performs above expectations during grilling. This grill is perfect for vending and catering because of the multiple configurations, attachments, and accessories that are available for use with this unit. My grill is currently mounted to a trailer for towing to major events and vending. Grill is so sturdy and solid you hear nothing rattling when being pulled down the road. Heats evenly and consistently throughout cooking. Takes 2 propane tanks that hang from the back of the unit. Recommendation, go to the Crown Verity website and view all of the other items that are made to be used with this unit. You will not be disappointed.

Scanpan CTX 12-3/4-Inch Chef's Pan with Lid Review

Scanpan CTX 12-3/4-Inch Chef's Pan with Lid
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I stumbled over Scanpan CTX cookware as I was searching for a replacement for my venerable cast iron skillets (seem to be getting heavier!). My test piece was a skillet, and it worked so well I bought several more pieces, including the Chef's pan. This piece sits permanently on my induction stove top, and is used for just about every meal. It heats quickly and evenly, it sears my chops and it simmers my sauces. In three months use I have not found anything to stick; I often clean it by pouring in some cold water with a drop of soap, turn on the induction to for a few seconds to warm it and run a dishcloth around, rinse and dry. My All Clad pans never get used any more. Quite pricey, though, I'm hoping that in a few years time I will look back on them as an investment.
OK, after three months, I have to say that the frypans now stick! Even with a starter of butter my two omelettes stuck to the pan.

Cuisinart GreenGourmet Hard Anodized Eco-Friendly Nonstick 5-1/2-Quart Saute Pan with Helper Handle and Cover Review

Cuisinart GreenGourmet Hard Anodized Eco-Friendly Nonstick 5-1/2-Quart Saute Pan with Helper Handle and Cover
Average Reviews:

This cookware does the job providing even heat throughout your cooking process. The surface is super slick but gives you a nice foundation for searing, braising and pan frying and lends itself to a variety of sauce making applications. A simply pan reduction sauce is a snap and cleanup is a breeze, with paper towel no less. The nicest features are the stay cool recycled stainless steel handle mirrored with the ability to finish your meal preparation in the oven or broiler.
The deep rich browning created by this pan is uniform and flavorful. Don't let the competition sway you, cooking till black is not the new brown! So, if you are going green, get this cookware, it's certainly your next step! If you wish to look at one up close and feel the quality for yourself then head on over to your nearest Le Gourmet Chef outlet store, you will not be disappointed.
I recently prepared Chicken Marsala utilizing this pan and a Simply Calphalon Saute Pan. Both pans performed well but the golden brown searing and coloration was more developed in the Cuisinart pan. I also was able to adjust the gas at a lower flame under the Cuisinart pan. The Calphalon pan was searing at 8 out of 10 on the cook-top range whereas the Cuisinart pan was searing at 4 out of 10. The fond left on the pan from the searing in the Cuisinart pan was also more developed and added to the Marsala recipe quite nicely.
I will post a comment and update the link when I test the new Calphalon Unison searing pan against the Cuisinart GreenGourmet Saute pan.

A hardworking addition to any cookware collection, this 5-1/2-quart saute pan provides a wide flat surface with straight sides that neatly contain ingredients. Measuring approximately 22-4/5 by 13-8/9 by 5-1/5 inches, the pan works well for anything from searing fish, browning meat, and braising roasts to cooking one-pot meals like chicken and rice. As part of Cuisinart's GreenGourmet Hard Anodized line of cookware, the pan combines an earth-friendly design with high-quality materials to ensure long-lasting performance with reduced impact on the environment. The cookware's hard-anodized aluminum construction heats up quickly and evenly, which means less energy required to achieve the desired cooking temperature, and its exclusive, scratch-resistant, ceramic-based nonstick coating (PTFE/PFOA-free and petroleum-free) helps reduce oil consumption and preserve the environment--plus it's applied at a temperature one half that of conventional nonsticks, and it won't peel off. Furthermore, its nonstick interior ensures effortless food release without the need for excess butter or oil, which means lower fat cooking options and quick cleanup. The cookware's riveted long handle and opposite helper handle stay cool to the touch on the stovetop and are made from 70-percent recycled stainless steel. A V-shape on one end of the long handle helps dissipate heat, while a hanging hole on the other end allows for convenient storage when not in use. Even more, Cuisinart uses packaging made from 100-percent recycled materials and printed with soy ink. Oven-safe up to 500 degrees F and safe to use under the broiler, the cookware cleans up easily by hand and carries a limited lifetime warranty. From the Manufacturer

Euro-Pro TO156 Extra-Large-Capacity 6-Slice Toaster Oven Review

Euro-Pro TO156 Extra-Large-Capacity 6-Slice Toaster Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Euro-Pro, which I purchased around Christmas 2006, has been an excellent value for me. It can be found at several major retailers, and I paid less than $30 for mine at Best Buy. Now, if you're all about snob appeal (or a stainless steel chassis) then you'd probably do better buying a Kitchenaid toaster. Sure, you'll pay five times the price, but that's what you get when you desire snob appeal. Actually, you get more than that with the Kitchenaid, but my level of culinary expertise doesn't require the extra features of the higher-priced brands.
Let me extol the virtues of this oven point by point:
1. The Price: It's cheap. It's really cheap.
2. The Look: No, it doesn't have the flair of the stainless steel models, but its clean, white chassis is certainly not offensive.
3. The size: It's not too big, not too small. It doesn't dominate your limited countertop, but it's much roomier inside than similarly-priced models. The Durabrand competitor from Wal-Mart is miniscule compared to this one. Unlike other models at this price, there are two racks inside!
4. Ease of cleaning: I once had a small Black & Decker oven that had a little latch at the bottom that made the bottom swing open. It was an interesting idea, but not always practical. With this one, there is a sliding crumb tray. You simply slide it out and rinse it off. Then you return to its position and you're good to go. It fits very nicely and I've not had one crumb get past it and stick to the bottom of the oven.
5. Ease of operation: It's almost a no-brainer. You have a "bake," "broil," and "toast/pizza" setting. There is a temperature setting that ranges up to 450 degrees. There's a 60 minute timer (rotary dial). There's a red light to indicate that the power is "on." Nothing more, nothing less.
6. Performance: I'm certain that a $150 oven would do better. It had better do better! But if you're looking for a BASIC toaster/countertop oven, you're probably not going to find one better. It does exactly what it claims it will do: Bake, Broil, and Toast. Don't be misled by the "Pizza" setting though. It is really for a slice of pizza or one of those small, plate-sized pizzas. If you want to bake a 16-inch pizza, you're still going to rely on the "big" oven in your kitchen.
Of course, an oven this cheap isn't without a few blemishes as well.
1. The rotary timer doesn't seem to work too well for anything under five minutes.
2. Using the black baking tray on the "toast" setting (where the heat comes from above) will blacken/burn your food. Use this tray ONLY while in the "bake" mode. This isn't a fault of the oven, but many users will probably make the same mistake I did.
3. I burned some food in my oven and now I have an ugly brown haze around the door. I scrubbed a bit too hard with a solution of orange cleaner and a Brill-o pad. Now, I have an ugly brown haze with scratches! Overall, this is a good oven. It would make a great gift (Christmas, housewarming, or wedding). I think it would be ideal in a dorm room or similarly-sized living arrangement. Now, aside from pizza bites and tater tots, you can also bake a chicken breast or broil a few chops too!

I have always baked my brownies and blondies in a Pyrex. But since I bought this pan, I can't believe how I ever did without it. Brownies and blondies cook evenly and to perfect consistency, and don't take as long as they do in the glass. And the best part is that you always have even, straight edges that look pretty when you cut up the treats. Also great for making birthday cakes and the likes. 0.5 Cu. Ft. Digital Convection Toaster Oven Review

0.5 Cu. Ft. Digital Convection Toaster Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had the DO1289 for a month and overall I am very happy with it. The toaster is gorgeous and does a great job baking. I have cooked fish and steaks and everything has turned out perfectly. The convection fan is not too loud and does its job well. In terms of toasting, the oven is not spectacular, but certainly adequate. Getting a crispy slice of toast takes about 5 minutes. Though it takes a few clicks to do anything on the toaster, the controls and knobs are straightforward and well designed.
I spent a long time analyzing and breaking down the pros and cons of the different top quality toasters so hopefully this review can save you some time. Here are the other toasters I looked at seriously :
Cuisinart TOB-195: Generally well-reviewed, but I could not get past the fact that the toaster does not have automatic shut-off. This is a key safety feature that I was unwilling to sacrifice. The DO1289 does have auto shut-off and turns off after beeping loudly 3 times. In addtion, the Cuisinart's crumb tray comes out the back, which seems totally stupid and impractical.
Krups FBC2: Looked like the perfect toaster, but again a safety feature got in the way. Apparently the Krups model has a poorly constructed door hinge and is prone to exploding. The DO1289's door is very smooth opening and seems well constructed. The Krups' quartz heating would have been nice, but still not worth it. I also suspect that the Delonghi has a little more overhead clearance than the Krups so I can roast a small chicken.
Breville Smart Oven: This oven has almost every feature and is the most powerful and spacious of the bunch, but $250 for a toaster is just absurd. I bought my Delonghi refurbished for $70, so it was no contest.
The Delonghi also has an oven light (which most others do not) and a bright permanently illuminated display--a nice feature at night for seeing the time. One other feature that doesn't get much attention, but was very important to me, is the Delonghi's Durastone enamel interior. This is great because, unlike toasters with traditional nonstick interiors, I can put metal and glass dishes in the oven, as well as aluminum foil (every one of the other aforementioned ovens advises against using glass or foil). Durastone is apparently nonstick so I can only hope that it has fewer chemicals or is safer than traditional nonstick (I would love it if someone knew the answer). Either way, it is a step up from the other high end toasters that I researched.
Based on my comparisons with other toaster ovens, I found that the Delonghi 1289 is the best designed and most practical. The Delonghi's performance is very good, though not spectacular, it has great features and, in my opinion, is the best choice for a high-end toaster oven.
UPDATE: After over a year owning the Delonghi DO-1289, I am still very happy and everything continues to work exactly as it should.

Hamilton Beach 2-Slice Bagel Toaster Review

Hamilton Beach 2-Slice Bagel Toaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am happy with this toaster. When I first bought it, I set the dial in the middle, inserted a piece of whole wheat bread, and it came out medium-toasted. It toasted evenly. So far I have only toasted 1 slice at a time. I tried using each slot. One time out of the four, the toast was ejected completely out of the toaster. I am hoping the spring will mellow out with time.
This toaster is billed as "automatic toast boost" but that seems to mean that the toast rises higher than other toasters. I am not sure if this is true and I wish it had a manual boost. Small pieces of bread do not stick up very high. I haven't tried a bagel but I can't imagine them sticking up as high as shown in the illustration.
For the price I think this is a very good toaster. It has a removable crumb tray. The slots seem good-sized and it grips the bread as you lower it. The bagel setting stops the center elements from heating. There is a little diagram by the slots to show you which way to insert your bagel. I haven't actually tried out any bagels.

(Edit - read update below. Final rating so far 3.5 stars)
---------------------
I'm not sure how this oven performs. As I din't own it long enough to know. (My friends with a bunch of kids have a toaster/oven/broiler that they've been using for years! At least ten. Don't know what their brand is, but it's definitely not this one.)
That was my second time using this oven... (sigh...)
The first time I toasted bread. It came out crisp and perfect.
The second time I was baking potatoes. At some point I opened the door to check how done they were, and from that moment on, the door wouldn't close. There is a part that is supposed to keep it tightly shut, and my guess is that that part gave way. Broke. Now there's a 1/2 an inch gap*. The door opens horizontally towards the bottom. So the gap is in the top where all the hot air rises. That is kind of annoying since all the heat escapes and the oven stops being an oven :-(
It was a uncalled gift, so I'm not THAT upset. But I just built a shelf for it, and my wife was really looking forward to grill toasts with cheese in it. And it happened on the SECOND use!!!
I will do a thorough research before buying any Proctor Silex item in the future!* I could probably place a heavy object against the door and it will keep it shut, but
1) the oven is located on a shelf and there's no place to put anything in front of it, and
2) Can You imagine yourself buying something so defective that you need to "help" it to function?

UPDATE: March.18.2011
I have fixed the door problem. I have opened the casing with a screw driver, and twisted and bent the spring that keeps the door closed. I guess it's metal dilated a bit because of the heat... Since then It's been working perfectly.
The timer allows you to set it to 15 min auto shutoff. Or its possible to use it without timer. and both will allow to run it on the oven or toaster cycle.
All in all, I'll give it 3.5 stars because:
- It shouldn't have required my input to fix it in the first place
- It's not that large inside, after all. And while the area allows you to put 4 slices of square toasts, the height isn't great enough to bake all you want.
Will try to update again after some time.
